Mzee Richard, 75, lives in Cherubai, Nabeki village which is located in Chepchoina ward within the broader Endebess constituency. The village, situated in challenging terrains, necessitated navigating through quiet forests and maize plantations guarded by individuals armed with rudimentary weapons and accompanied by police officers.
It is disheartening that Mzee Richard Barasa has been residing beneath a rock, resembling a cave, for the past 13 years. His makeshift dwelling comprised worn-out blankets and clothes, serving as both mattress and covers. During inclement weather, he seeks refuge beneath the rock, covering the top with polythene to prevent water seepage.
Mzee Richard reveals he has 16 children, most of whom have passed away, and the living ones have severed ties with him. To get a meal, sometimes he’ll catch a grasshopper for roasting and consume with poorly cooked, unwashed, and unpeeled potatoes obtained through begging.
Despite the daunting circumstances, Mzee Richard recounts childhood memories with Governor Natembeya and expresses a wish for assistance in acquiring land and dignified housing for himself and other elderly individuals facing homelessness, especially with the looming fear of potential eviction from ADC-owned land added to his challenges.
